Calm water and a boat on a South Florida day

Veteran resource

The Water Reset Guide for Veterans.

Five simple, self-guided practices for creating a brief pause near water or outdoors. Use what feels comfortable, safe, and practical for you.

A simple reset, at your pace

Start small and keep it practical.

Time near water, fresh air, a familiar outdoor setting, and a supportive conversation can create a welcome break from a busy day. This guide offers simple, optional practices to help you pause, notice your surroundings, and reconnect with what feels steady.

You do not need special equipment, a boat, or perfect conditions. Choose a place and approach that feels comfortable and safe. You can use one practice at a time, repeat what is helpful, or simply take a few quiet minutes outdoors.

Five practices

Choose one small reset.

These are general wellness practices. They are not treatment, therapy, or medical advice.

01

Choose a calm place

Find a setting that feels manageable. Sit near a shoreline, on a dock, in a park, on a porch, or by a window with a view. If you are near water, stay in a safe, familiar public area and follow posted guidance.

02

Listen and slow your breathing

Notice the sound around you. Listen for water, wind, birds, or everyday background sounds. Take four comfortable, unforced breaths. There is no need to force a pattern. Just give yourself a few moments to slow down.

03

Take a horizon break

Let your eyes rest on something farther away. Look toward the horizon, tree line, or a fixed point in the distance for about a minute. Notice color, movement, light, or weather without trying to solve anything.

04

Add gentle movement

Choose an easy pace. Take a short walk, stretch your shoulders, or move through a familiar outdoor space. Keep the goal simple: a little movement, a little air, and a break from being still or rushed.

05

Share the moment

Connection can be simple. Send a text, call someone you trust, invite a friend for a walk, or ask another veteran about a local opportunity. A brief conversation can be a practical next step.

Use the guide responsibly

Comfort and safety come first.

Choose familiar places and follow water, weather, and local safety guidance.

Do not use this guide as a reason to push through distress or ignore your own limits.

Use a buddy system or tell someone your plans when appropriate.

Reach out for professional support when you need more than a general self-guided practice.
